Hello! I’m glad that you are here…
Donnisha Lavigne, MS, LPC, NCC
I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia and a board-certified counselor through the National Board of Certified Counselors. During my years of experience I have worked in a number of settings including inpatient, community mental health, corrections, and private practice. I possess educational, professional and lived experience within the mental health field and I believe that my experiences increase my ability to be empathic while providing a uniquely tailored approach to each client.
I identify as a Black woman of color. I am trained in providing services through a multicultural lens and I am skilled and able to work with women of different ethnic, cultural, religious backgrounds. I pride myself in using a uniquely tailored therapeutic approach with each client that I serve to ensure that my clients have meaningful experiences throughout their therapeutic journey. With over 7 years of professional experience coupled with my lived experience, I have a unique approach to providing counseling services that leans heavily on strengths-based techniques as I believe that we have the innate ability to change our perspectives, thus, changing how we view or receive different life stressors.
Professionally, I identify as a Humanistic Therapist while taking an eclectic approach when tailoring treatment for each one of my clients. Other therapeutic modalities I use in my practice include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (informed), and a strengths-based approach overall. Finding the right therapist is a core component of treatment success and it is my opinion that you will greatly benefit from working with a therapist who specializes in your presenting concerns. While I am confident in my ability to provide a positive experience for any client that I encounter, I purposely decided to focus my education, research, and practice on individuals who identify with one or multiple minority groups.
How my journey began…
I experienced my first mental health-related symptoms around the age of 13. Through the grace of God, I managed to make it until the age of 25 without any psychiatric intervention, but not without trials and tribulations that likely would have been avoided had I received the treatment that I needed. I finished college in 2015 and graduated with my Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in December 2017. I officially walked across the graduation stage in May 2018. 2 weeks later, I experienced the sudden, traumatic loss of one of my very best friends. 2 months afterwards, I was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
While I had the advantage of being a mental health counselor to aid in my recovery, I struggled to accept my conditions. I was on an emotional rollercoaster ride for weeks, months, years, until I finally reached my breaking point. At my very lowest, I knew things had to change if I wanted to stay alive AND live a meaningful life. Things aren’t perfect in my life but I am continuing on my path to mental healing and wellness.
My personal journey has given me a unique perspective when working with my clients. While I value the impact and importance of education, I also am aware of the significant role and contribution my mental health journey plays in my practice as a counselor. If I could speak to every girl or woman experiencing any of the things that I have been through, I would tell them that with the right help, things can and WILL get better.
